👕 What to Wear
- Light cotton clothing — the heat can be intense, especially midday.
- Modest attire for temple visits — cover shoulders and knees. Remove footwear before entering temple sanctums.
- Comfortable walking shoes — the terrain is uneven with boulders, steps, and dusty paths. Not suitable for flip-flops.
- Hat/cap and sunglasses — sun protection is essential.
- Light jacket or shawl for winter evenings (Dec–Feb), when temperatures can drop to 15°C.
🎒 What to Carry
- Water bottle — stay hydrated. Many temples have water refill stations.
- Sunscreen (SPF 50+) — the sun is strong even in winter.
- Power bank — electricity can be intermittent in budget guesthouses.
- Torch/headlamp — useful for early morning treks and poorly lit areas.
- Cash (INR) — many small shops, auto drivers, and cafes don't accept cards. ATMs are available in Hosapete but limited in Hampi.
- Insect repellent — especially during monsoon and evenings near the river.
- First-aid kit — basic supplies, band-aids for blisters, ORS packets for dehydration.
- Camera with extra batteries — you'll be clicking non-stop!
🛡️ Safety & Health
- Sun protection: Avoid direct sun between 11 AM – 3 PM. Take breaks in shaded areas.
- Stay hydrated: Drink at least 3–4 litres of water per day, especially in summer.
- Food hygiene: Eat at busy, popular restaurants. Avoid raw salads and peeled fruits from street vendors.
- Monkeys: They are bold and will snatch food/bags. Keep your belongings secure and don't carry open food near temples.
- Uneven terrain: Watch your step while exploring ruins and boulders. Good footwear is essential.
- Solo travelers: Hampi is generally safe. Avoid isolated ruins after dark. Keep valuables in a hotel locker.
- Emergency contacts: Dial 112 for police/ambulance. The nearest hospital is in Hosapete (District Hospital).
🪷 Temple Etiquette
- Remove footwear before entering active temple sanctums (Virupaksha, etc.).
- Dress modestly — shorts and sleeveless tops are discouraged inside temples.
- Photography is allowed in most areas but prohibited inside inner sanctums. Flash may be restricted.
- Silence your phone and maintain respectful behavior inside temple premises.
- No touching the ancient carvings and sculptures — oils from hands can damage the stone.
- Donations are voluntary. Touts may ask for money — politely decline if not interested.
📱 Connectivity & Internet
- Mobile network: Jio, Airtel, and BSNL work well in Hosapete and most of Hampi. Vodafone-Idea can be patchy.
- WiFi: Most hotels in Hosapete offer free WiFi. Cafes in Hampi also provide WiFi.
- Data: Buy a local SIM at the airport or in Hosapete (ID proof required). Jio offers the best coverage.
- Power cuts: Budget guesthouses may have power interruptions. Carry a power bank.
💰 Bargaining & Payments
- Bargaining is expected at Hampi Bazaar and with auto drivers. Start at 50–60% of the quoted price for souvenirs.
- Auto fares: Negotiate before getting in. Hosapete to Hampi should cost ₹250–350.
- UPI payments (Google Pay, PhonePe) are widely accepted at shops and restaurants.
- Carry cash for small purchases, entry fees, and tips.
- Beware of touts offering "special" guided tours or "exclusive" access — use official ASI guides.
🌿 Responsible Tourism Pledge
- Don't climb on ancient structures or boulders.
- Carry reusable water bottles and avoid single-use plastics.
- Support local businesses — shop local, eat local.
- Dispose of waste responsibly. If there's no dustbin, carry it out.
