For history enthusiasts, a guided walk with an ASI-approved guide can transform your understanding of Vijayanagara. Guides charge ~₹1,000–1,500 for a half-day tour. They'll explain the stories behind the carvings, the urban planning, and the empire's rise and fall.
Where to hire: ASI counter near Virupaksha Temple or at the Hampi Museum
Located in Hosapete, this massive dam offers a pleasant half-day outing. Enjoy boating in the reservoir, walk through the beautiful gardens, and stay for the evening musical fountain show. The dam is an engineering marvel and a key irrigation source for the region.

The ancient market street of Vijayanagara is now lined with souvenir shops selling stone carvings, handicrafts, jewelry, postcards, and hippie-style clothing. Bargaining is expected. Look for small stone sculptures, wood carvings, and locally-made jewelry.
Tip: Bargain politely — start at 50% of the quoted price for handicrafts.
